Martinez throws hard but has struggled with his control throughout most of his career.  In the GCL in 2005 he gave up a lot of hits with a terrible K/BB ratio.  In 2006, however, he pitched very well there, then got a late-season promotion to Williamsport.  With a pitcher who spends 2-3 years in the Caribbean summer leagues and then 2-3 more in short season ball, it's hard to know whether the guy's a prospect or just somebody who's learned enough to get less experienced hitters out.  The answer in Martinez' case seems to have been the latter, as he struggled badly at both State College and Hickory in 2007.  He spent 2008 at State College and posted a decent ERA with a low opponents' batting average, but he walked too many hitters.  The Pirates may give him a shot at West Virginia in 2009.  After four years now in short season ball he needs to succeed there.
