The Pirates signed Ordaz around the beginning of spring training. He struggled when he was in the low minors, but temporarily appeared to be a prospect after he was traded to St. Louis. He had brief chances in parts of seven major league seasons, but never showed any evidence that he could hit at that level. He's also had a number of seasons, especially lately, in which he played relatively little. It seems likely he's been hurt a lot, but I'm not certain of that. He was originally a SS, but served as the primary 2B for Indianapolis. He had a solid season with the bat and was voted the Indians' best defensive player. Surpisingly, he was back in minor league camp in 2008, without a non-roster invitation to major league camp. Once again, he played well but missed much of the season due to injury. Since they brought him back once they may want to do so again if he's healthy. The Indianapolis double play combo in 2009 is likely to be Shelby Ford and either Luis Cruz or Brian Bixler, but there's always a need for depth so the Pirates could try to bring him back.
