Rivas advanced through the minors quickly and at early ages, but his bat never really caught up despite nearly 1,900 major league at-bats.  He has a little power, but doesn't get on base nearly enough.  Going by zone rating or Baseball Prospectus' defensive ratings, his range was very poor with the Twins.  Rivas hasn't hit very well since he found himself back in AAA, especially considering his experience level.  He signed a minor league deal with the Pirates in December 2007 and made the team with a good spring.  The Pirates were quite enthralled with him, which makes you wonder whether they asked themselves why he spent most of 2005-07 in AAA after being a major league starter for four years.  Somewhat alarmingly, he stood a chance of getting significant playing time early in the season due to Freddy Sanchez' slow recovery from shoulder surgery.
