The Pirates acquired Benitez in a late-season trade for RHP Mike Koplove, who'd been with Indianapolis.  The trade appeared to fill minor league vacancies; West Virginia, to which the Pirates planned to assign Benitez, didn't really have a shortstop after Chase D'Arnaud was promoted to Lynchburg and Greg Picart got hurt.  The announced plan was for the Pirates to send him there, but instead he went to State College and played sparingly, mostly at second.  Benitez seemed to be showing some progress with the bat in 2006-07, but his assignments in 2008 make it clear the Mariners regarded him as an organizational player.  Another tip-off is the fact that his time in the field was more or less equally split between second, third and short.  Given his assignment after the trade, it appears that the Pirates regard him no differently.
