Machado was considered a good prospect in his early years with the Phillies, as he was rushed to high A but managed to hold his own despite being very young for the level.  He's always been regarded as a very slick defensive player.  His bat seemed to be catching up in 2002, but he's never hit much at all since then.  Machado has always drawn a lot of walks, but he's probably a good example of a guy who just didn't make enough contact.

The Pirates signed Machado to a minor league deal for 2009.  He'll be a middle infield fill-in for Indianapolis.  The Pirates signed Pedro Lopez at the same time as Machado and, of the two, Lopez looks like the better player and is also much younger.  It was Machado, however, who got sent to Indianapolis and Lopez to Altoona.
