The Pirates signed Lopez to a minor league contract for 2009. He's a flashy defensive player, although he doesn't have an outstanding arm. He hasn't done enough with the bat, though, to become a real prospect. He spent the early part of his minor league career playing 2B because the White Sox had another prospect at the same levels whom they wanted to keep at SS. He's been primarily a SS, however, since 2004. It's interesting that he's a year and a half younger than Brian Bixler and over two months younger than Luis Cruz. Lopez lost a battle with Anderson Machado to be the primary backup infielder in AAA and instead opened as the utility infielder at Altoona. He ended up bouncing back and forth between AAA and AA, spending most of the season's second half in Indianapolis. He played every infield and outfield position except first and center, but he mostly played second in AAA, and short and third in AA. He hit pretty much like he always has, meaning some singles and not much else. He became a free agent after the season.
