Pena had a good pro debut in the DSL. His
position was initially unclear, as the minor league roster listed it as "UTIL" and
the media guide as "RHP." Minorleaguebaseball.com listed him at 2B in 2006
and SS in 2007, and SS was his primary position in 2006. He
was in camp in 2007 but did not make the GCL roster. Back in the DSL
he had a very similar season, except his hitting slipped a little. In 2008
he started off in extended spring training, but the Pirates sent him to
Hickory for a while in late April and May to fill in. He later went
to State College and hit respectably, especially for
somebody skipping rookie ball, while playing 2B and SS. He
moved back to Hickory in late July and spent
August there. He held his own with the bat, hitting for a passable average but
with no power or plate discipline. He primarily played SS when Jordy
Mercer was out with a minor injury, but he also saw
time at 2B and 3B. The Pirates appear to have slotted him
as an organizational utility player already, but his hitting has been a little
better than you'd expect from an org. guy. He'll probably
back up somewhere in class A in 2009.
