Alvarez, who's from Venezuela, put up very good numbers in every area at NAIA Cumberland.  He went to Chipola JC before going there.  He was drafted as a senior, but I don't know where he was in 2005 as he didn't play for Cumberland.  The Pirates signed him and he played sparingly at all three IF positions for Bradenton.  In 2007 he filled in with several low level affiliates, then he did the same in 2008 only a little higher up.  So far he's done nothing with the bat other than drawing quite a few walks.  He'll probably continue as an organizational utility player in 2009.
