Vasquez has had an odd career progression, signing
at nearly age 20 in the Dominican, which is unusually late.
Although he didn't do much in the DSL in 2007 besides walk and strike out a lot,
but the Pirates brought him to spring training, placed him on the
inactive list in mid-June, then removed him from the list and assigned him to
State College in July. Considering his very limited experience,
Vasquez held his own, with fairly good power. His plate discipline obviously
was good and he'll have to cut down on the K's. He
split his time between second and short, committing one error in 18 games
at second and five in 28 games at short. With the error-prone Spikes,
those totals were miniscule. It's always hard to tell whether a guy who gets off
the normal path is a prospect or a guy who's being moved
around simply to fill in holes. Vasquez should be at West Virginia in 2009. He'd be
a better choice to play second than Chad Rice.
