Vasquez has had an odd career progression, signing at nearly age 20 in the Dominican, which is unusually late. Although he didn't do much in the DSL in 2007 besides walk and strike out a lot, the Pirates brought him to spring training, placed him on the inactive list in mid-June, then removed him from the list and assigned him to State College in July. Considering his very limited experience, Vasquez held his own, with fairly good power. His plate discipline obviously wasn't good and he'll have to cut down on the K's. He split his time between second and short, committing one error in 18 games at second and five in 28 games at short. With the error-prone Spikes, those totals were miniscule. In training camp, he was playing mainly shortstop. It's always hard to tell whether a guy who gets off the normal path is a prospect or a guy who's being moved around simply to fill in holes. Vasquez returned to State College in 2009 and struggled badly.  He played mainly at short, with some games at third and a few at second.  At this stage he looks destined to be an organizational utility player at best.
