Willemburg is the second South African player the Pirates have signed, the first being Mpho Gift Ngoepe. After his brief time with the Royals, he played in Europe and South Africa, eventually appearing for his native country in the World Baseball Classic. Given his age, it's unlikely he could be more than an organizational player. He made brief appearances to fill in for West Virginia and State College in 2009. He was overmatched at the plate and also struggled in the field.
