Model BL

The Model BL is a highly prized collector's item, less than 18,000 of these having been produced during an extremely short production run of two years (1972 -1973). Prices range from $800 for a silver tone finished model to up to $2000 for a rare, black finished model, when you can find it. These prices tend to keep them out of reach of the user interested in a good shooter, which is a shame, as many photographers consider the BL to be one of the best Minox subminiature cameras ever made. The reason is because this was the last of the Minox models made with a completely mechanical precision shutter, but still had a semi-coupled CdS exposure metre built in . This allowed the shooter to accurately set exposure by simply turning the shutter speed knob until the metre needle lined up with the exposure index bracket needle, and then shoot. Should the PX-675 button cell battery that powers the metre die, the shooter still had the full range of shutter speeds available and could still successfully take photographs.

Many thanks to Martin Doctor, who kindly provided the photograph of the beautiful, and extremely rare, black Model BL above.
