Minox Books

Three of the most current books on Minox subminiature cameras are listed below. There are quite a few others available, but these are out of print. For a descriptive listing of these earlier books, please refer to the Library section of the Sub Club web site (see the Resources section of this site); armed with that information you can often track down used copies of these books on the Web.

Minox - Marvel in Miniature by D. Scott Young
ISBN 1-58721-068-1

Ethics demand that I tell you that this is a shameless plug for a book that I wrote, which was released to books stores throughout America in August of 2000, copy righted from June of that year. It is a large format paperback book of 185 pages, illustrated with black and white photographs, some of which have been reproduced on this web site. It is available at Barnes & Noble, Waldenbooks and Borders book stores among others and can be ordered at the counter should it not be on the shelf. It can also be ordered from the following stores via the Web or directly from the publisher at www.1stbooks.com
In each instance, a simple keyword search on the word "minox" is sufficient to bring you to the ordering screen for the book.
The book is divided into two sections, the first being a comprehensive history of the cameras and their inventor, including complete coverage of every subminiature camera in the line, through 1999, as well as most of their accessories. The second section is a broad introductory overview of photography in general, designed to give the new photographer some basics to the process. Although much of this is applicable to any camera, there are plenty of tips aimed specifically at the Minox user, including thorough operating instructions covering every model, the binocular clamp accessory and the Minosix metres (finding the owner's manual for a 1954 Model IIIS can be frustrating, to say the least). Appendices at the end of the book give a rich insight into Walter Zapp's design philosophy, including articles written by him, and extracts of personal interviews with him, among other things. Several nuggets of information not previously known about the history of this camera line will enhance the reader's enjoyment of the book.

Minox Variations in 8 x 11 by Hubert E. Heckmann
ISBN 3-88984-153-8

When I last saw him in September of 1995, Hr. Heckmann had just been reelected as the President of the 1st German Minox Club, one of the largest Minox clubs out there. Closely associated with Minox, GmbH and Walter Zapp over the years, he put together one of the best books out there on Minox cameras, first released in English in 1995 after an initial release in German. Hardcover, 196 pages, this is a meticulously researched and highly informative book, lavishly illustrated with numerous colour and black and white photographs. A welcome addition to any Minox enthusiast's library, it is an absolute necessity for the serious Minox collector or researcher. Although several book store Web sites list this book as being out of print, it is still available for sale from the book section of the Minox, USA web site (see the Resources section of this site for the link).

Spy Camera - The Minox Story by Morris Moses
ISBN 1-874707-28-6

One of the first books I ever read devoted exclusively to Minox cameras, and still one of the very best. Originally published in 1990, it has recently been updated (the second edition co-authored by John Wade) to 240 pages, hard cover, and well illustrated in both colour and black and white. One of the attractions of this book, in addition to it's comprehensive treatment of the history of the cameras, is it's anecdotal references as well as coverage of virtually all of Minox's optical products, including their pocketable 35mm and 110 film format line of cameras, and the new Bino-scope. Like Variations in 8 x 11 listed above, some Web stores may indicate the book as being out of print (possibly a reference to the 1st edition), however it can also be purchased from the Minox, USA Web store (see the Resources section of this site)
