Software Engineering
- Project management. I am well versed in the management of software system development, particularly systems for the management of biological data (e.g., chemical, microarray, genomic data).
- Example project: I led a team that developed an innovative laboratory data management system able to easily capture evolving experimental protocols using a metadata-driven schema.
- Software development:
- Development of a genotyping laboratory information management system (LIMS)
- Web site Re-factoring (e.g., the MetaCyc site), designing for usability.
- Database design using MS Access, Oracle and MySQL (e.g., the BioWarehouse system)
- Ontologies: Custom ontology development; creating ontology mapping systems, such as DIAN.
- Document management: Developing customized document indexing systems using the dtSearch, Verity and Enfish engines; capture of textual data into a relational database using Microsoft Access; conversion of textual information into a relational schema.
- Bug database design, implementation and customization: I have deployed and customized change control systems such as Bugzilla and PHPBugtracker.

Proposals and other types of writing tasks
- Management of government proposals (grants and contracts): DARPA, NIH, NSF. Most significant achievements: I was the proposal manager for two proposals that were funded at over $10 million each.
- Proposal writing: I have personally written a number of winnin proposals to NSF and NIH.
- Patent applications: I've been involved in the writing of several patent applications for software systems.

- Basic bioinformatics research: Survey of orphan enzymatic activities (NSF funded).
- Life sciences marketing. Example: performed market analysis for bio- and chemoinformatics applications of the Scyld Beowulf Linux cluster management software.
- Reviewing intellectual property and preparing patent applications.
