I've raced inboards there in the past, but this was a first time event for this class. It's a beautiful lake located just about dead center between Astoria and Seaside on the Oregon coast. We camp in and run out of the parking lot and park provided by Clatsop County. I really have to give a personal salute to the Clatsop County Parks crew in charge of the restrooms. They must have kept people hiding behind trees to hop'n'mop between customers. All summer long the potty drill involves either serious breath-holding and a moon-suit or some sort of suspension of sensory input. A day in at some sites you begin to think of the home throne as almost fit for light surgical practice. Of course there's always the plastic outhouse lottery, but the only two here appeared to have been reserved for the visually impaired (Eeeeek!...can't even touch the door to get out!). In any case this was a *really* pleasant difference. The Course here was a big one. It looked to be close to a mile around (I think we used to run a mile records course there in the past). Of course this makes for flaming calculators in the E-pits. There was also some potential for trouble in that the long straightaways meant potential difficulty locating the entrance buoy for the next turn. The standard here is to drive toward a large physical landmark aligned with the buoy-line and the buoys will eventually come into view. Two of the guys, Paramore and Cloud are familiar with this, but Crabtree and Boddy were about to get that "lost" feeling. Both Bill Paramore and Don Crabtree were working with new battery sets. Bill had fresh batteries from his new sponsor, Pacific Power of Everett, and was also trying out a huge rheostat as a field voltage limiter. Don had built and installed an air-trap at the front of the boat that he hoped would help the ride and control, and stop the water coming up the cockpit as had been the situation prior to this. And he was trying smaller batteries looking for more voltage. Suddenly that big course becomes a real factor in race strategy. Brad Boddy's Uncle Normy had made several revisions to the boat between events, including a major shift of battery weight and a larger rear fin. The Clouds had increased the skeg and appeared to be running a different motor. They also brought along an older 25ss Hydro and motor to do a bit of gas racing. Saturday, 29 June: Racing began at 10:30 a.m. with the J-stock hydro kids making a pretty show of it as we launched the E-boats. We started from a dock located between the launch ramps. Mike Bartlett cued the drivers, held up the green flag, and waved the field away. Don Crabtree just *Flew* off the line, outpulling both Cloud and Boddy over the first hundred yards at which time they swallowed him up and vanished into the first turn. Bill Paramore was still at the dock turning dials and flipping switches and rending the air shades of blue. In mid-rant Bill discovered he'd forgotten to plug the system in. He hooked up and switched on and left 15 seconds behind the rest. Cloud and Boddy went into the turn together, both boats a little wiggly but came through OK. Coming off the turn Brad's boat hooked a little and appeared to aim toward the infield then pulled back outside to run up the chute. Cloud seemed to have the speed off the corner but Brad began to build speed down the straightaway to overtake Steve and close the door at the entrance to the second turn. Brad wasn't able to open a lead though and Steve harried Brad to the finish where Brad won by a boat-length. Don Crabtree ran along in third, losing power to the long course, but just finishing before running out of power. Bill Paramore ran back until his batteries gave up at about a lap and a half, his big thrill having been passed by the 144v tong war (one on each side) as he was running up the back straight on his first lap. Heat 1 finish order: Brad Boddy 400 points Steve Cloud 300 Don Crabtree 225 Bill Paramore DNF Between heats Brad Boddy inched the batteries forward a bit and Cloud went back to his original Skeg Configuration. Brad had been having a real problem finding the next entrance buoy coming off turns and was having a time of it with the boat trying to swap ends in the turns. Don Crabtree was very happy with his set-up. The boat was riding better than ever with the addition, and he felt that the batteries would provide plenty of power as they were cycled and "aged". He'd had a problem with his controller pot wanting to be fully on or fully off and solved the problem neatly by blowing up the controller while on the trailer (No Rich...I don't know how). The remedy of the moment was to mouse on a slide-pot from Bill Paramore's boat. Bill felt that his batteries needed more cycles to go the distance and elected to run a different prop as a test. Heat-two saw the whole fleet depart on-schedule...Sort-of. Cloud, Boddy and Crabtree blew off toward the first turn while Paramore's boat was trying to act the role of a blender. Whrrrr!...Burp!...Whirrr!...Burp!... Whirrr!...Burp!...Whirrr!...Burp!...Damn! Back to the dock. Well, at least he got to see an exciting race. Cloud and Boddy had gotten to the first turn in a rush with Crabtree close behind. Once again Cloud would accellerate out best but Boddy would build superior speed going into the next turn. Bit by bit, Cloud built a three boat-length lead, as Brad's boat lost time in the turns from handling problems. Then, Coming to the finish, Cloud's boat shut down and Boddy went on to win with Don Crabtree coming on to pick up second. Heat 2 finish order: Brad Boddy 400 points Don Crabtree 300 Steve Cloud DNF Bill Paramore DNS Race finish order: Brad Boddy 800 points Don Crabtree 525 Steve Cloud 300 Bill Paramore 0 Following the race, Bill Paramore backed the now trailered boat into the lake to give the batteries a good drain for another cycle then re-charged and returned to the prop that worked. Crabtree was happy with his set-up and simply lit the generator. Cloud concluded that he was heating his Optimas just a little too much and the wad of amperage the boat was pulling was fostering internal breakdown...He'd back the heating off a bit. Boddy was having a serious contest with the boat for control and the boat was close to winning the argument. He began a *serious* relocation of batteries. Sunday, 30 June: Sunday Started early, with a driver's meeting at 8:30 and racing beginning at 9:30, E-Boats up first. Both 144v racers ran through the first turn and up the backstretch side-by-side, once again over the class world speed record. Crabtree was behind in third and Bill Paramore cruising in fourth. Cloud and Boddy once again traded positions on accelleration and top speed, but the last battery adjustment Boddy made was paying off in good handling and Brad managed to hold Steve off to win by half a deck length. Don Crabtree easily finished in third before his batteries pooped out and Bill Paramore finished in fourth with plenty of power to return to the pits. Brad Boddy also returned under power. Don And Steve came in on a rope. Heat 1 finish order: Brad Boddy 400 points Steve Cloud 300 Don Crabtree 225 Bill Paramore 169 The second heat was yet another gunfight. We have here a couple of real competitors who don't have any thoughts about second and don't blink easily. This time Cloud went wide to keep up boat speed and kept Brad in tight to pull a big lead off the Exit pin. Once again, Boddy unreeled that big Blackwell to overtake and outrun Cloud into turn two. Steve then decided to dive to the inside lane, but in the attempt the boat caught a bit of wake and hooked violently. It looked like it was going to go all the way around or worse but Steve caught it and recovered nicely. Unfortunately he'd lost a lot of velocity and by the time he was back to speed Boddy had six boat-lengths lead and couldn't be caught. Crabtree once again finished third and ran out of energy to be towed back. Bill Paramore finished at a much faster clip than the previous heat and still had power to return to the pits at speed. Heat 2 finish order: Brad Boddy 400 points Steve Cloud 300 Don Crabtree 225 Bill Paramore 169 Race finish order: Brad Boddy 800 points Steve Cloud 600 Don Crabtree 450 Bill Paramore 338 Season points: Brad Boddy 1900 points Steve Cloud 1225 Bill Paramore 1032 Don Crabtree 919 Rich Rudman 225 Thanks to all who came out to watch, Our next race is Capitol Lake Olympia WA on 13/14 july.
