ANNIVERSARY OF NIKOLA TESLA'S DEATH "POLITIKA" Jan. 17, 1992 Dr. A.S. Marincic, Corresponding member Serbian Academy of Arts and Sciences, Dir. Tesla Museum in Belgrade On orthodox Christmas forty-nine years ago, Thursday January 7, 1943, Nikola Tesla died alone in his room at Hotel New Yorker. At the moment of his death he was alone, according to the doctor's report, he died in his sleep. The day prior to his death he asked the chambermaid to put on the door of his apartment - "Please do not disturb." That is how they knew on January 8, that he passed away a day earlier. Immediately his good friend Kenneth Swezey and his nephew Dr. Sava Kosanovich were informed. News of his death was soon all over the world with the report in the New York Times of January 8. A short biography of his life was printed with his great work and significant inventions. He had exactly 900 inventions among which were the induction motor and the Tesla transformer or coil as it is known by many. The story mentioned of his coming to the U.S. with only 4 cents in his pocket and begins to work in Edison's Laboratory and later struggles for independence and the forming of his own laboratory and his discovery of the polyphase system and basic ideas of the Radio about Tesla's origins, it stated that he was from Smiljan i Lika, boundary region of Austria-Hungary, that he was a son of a Greed Orthodox priest and a mother gifted with inventive ideas. It mentioned that he worked in various places in Europe before coming to America and that he never married. The Yugoslav information Center that was opened in 1942 announced on January 8, 1943 that "Nikola Tesla", father of Radio and modern transmission of electricity will have a State Funeral under the auspices of the Yugoslav Government in Exile. A Requiem will be held on January 12 at the Campbell Funeral Home on Madison Avenue and 81st Street in New York City. REQUIEM AT ST. JOHN THE DIVINE CATHEDRAL Requiem was held at the largest cathedral in New York, St. John the Divine on Tuesday, January 12 in the afternoon. There were 2,000 people at the funeral among whom were famous inventors, Nobel laureates, leaders in electrical industries, the Yugoslav Government and many from various disciplines of science and technology. The City of New York was represented by Mr. Newbold Morris in the name of the Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia. Dr. Ernest Alexander represented the Electrical Institute of Engineering along with Edwin H. Armstrong, Professor at Columbia University and father of Frequency Modulation (FM), Dr. Harvey Rentachler, Director of Research at Westinghouse Corp, and representatives of scientific research labs, Col. Henry Breckenridge, George Skouris, Thomas Lamont, Prof. William H. Barton, Curator of Hayden Planetarium, Dr. H.W. Chase and others. Yugoslavia was publicly represented by Konstantin Fotich, Honorary pallbearers were Dr. Ivan Subasic, Governor of Croatia; Bogoljub Jeftich, previous Prime Minister of Yugoslavia and Franc Znoj, Minister Plenipotentiary. Dr. Branko Cubrilovich and Sava Kosanovich, who was at the same time President of Eastern and Middle Eastern Committee for Planning which was included by Yugoslavia, Czechoslovakia, Poland and the Greek Government. The New York Consulate was represented by Dragisa Stanojevich. Among the Honorary pallbearers were Oskar Gavrilovich, Chief of the Press Bureau and Bogdan Radica of the Yugoslav Information Center. Among the wreaths were one from King Peter II, Government, Federation of Yugoslav Sokoli and American Scientific Institutions. In the receiving line for the family was Dr. Sava Kosanovich, minister in Government in Exile. The Orthodox services were conducted by Very Rev. Dusan Sukletovich and was assisted by Very Rev. Milan Mrvicin from Lebanon, PA. At the completion of the Requiem, Rev. Edward West read the Episcopalian liturgy. At the end with organ accompaniment, Bishop W.T. Manning, head of the Protestant-Episcopal Diocese of New York gave the final benediction to the deceased one. ACTIVITIES, EVENTS, ETC... Dr. Rastko C. Maglic, Director of Tesla Memorial Society and a member of the International Tesla Society of colorado Springs, CO. Wrote a paper with Nicholas Kosanovich about the phenomena of Resonance for the 1992 Summer Symposium at Colorado Springs. it will be part of an anthology to be published by Int. Tesla Society. "EXPO 92" in Seville, Spain, a World's Fair dedicated to the 500th anniversary of the discovery of America has many nations participating. The Yugoslav Pavilion is centered around Nikola Tesla. The theme being the "Age of Discovery". His famous Columbian egg is on exhibit along with many of his devices. The newspaper "Politika" also states that Pupin and his contribution to telephony and Milutin Milankovich who is noted for the geologic "Milankovich Cycle". We sent a letter to Mayor David N. Dinkins about putting a statue of Nikola Tesla in Bryant Park. This is near the N.Y. Public Library where Tesla would feed the pigeons daily. We received a reply that is being considered. it has been proposed that the bust made by the Ivan Mestrovic be used. His son, Dr. Matthew Mestrovich, gives his approval. Please write to: Hon. David N. Dinkens, Mayor, New York City City Hall New York, NY The chamber group - Washington Pro Musica performed at the Christmas concert for sick children at the National Institute of Health in Bethesda, MD. The funding was by the embassy of Kuwait. Philip Momchilovich, Director, is also our Director of Performing Arts. Our society was the umbrella group to sponsor said concert. It took place on Dec. 2, 1991. "Washington Pro Musica outreach activities throughout the Washington D.C. community to further knowledge and appreciation of great traditional and modern chamber works through educational workshops in schools and churches, as well as performances for other special audiences including minorities, the aged, handicapped and the serious ill." As is known, Tesla was a lover of music. New York Daily News - Gray Basnight wrote a piece about Tesla in the Urban Gazette section of the paper Wednesday, July 1992 to pay tribute to Tesla on his birthday. The by-line, "Who? Forget Him - it was our Tesla all along". He was referring to Marconi and the invention of Radio. Another by-line "His Dream: The Final Nightmare of Power Companies Everywhere". This is with reference to his project on Long Island to transmit energy and/or power at great distance without wires". It was a 3/4 page article dedicated to him! There is renewed interest in what Tesla felt about energy transmission in a more concrete sense. Studies are being made to investigate the Earth's natural resonance and to tie this with transfer of energy through resonance. Most of us know about the police precinct in Tesla's neighborhood mentioning the earth shaking as a result of one of his experiments!! I would like to quote an excerpt from his lecture delivered before the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia, Feb. 1893 ..."I would like to say a few words on a subject which constantly fill my thoughts, and which concerns the welfare of all. I mean the transmission of intelligible signals or, perhaps power, to any distance without the use of wires . . . . Why not try to avail ourselves of using the Earth instead of that single wire which is now feasible. Theoretically, it could not require a great amount of energy to produce a dis- turbance at great distance, or even all over the surface of the globe . . . . I am firmly convinced that it can be done, and hope that we shall live to see it done" - Light and Other High-Frequency Phenomena ...I have produced electrical charges, the actual path of which, from end to end, was probably more than one hundred long. July 7, 1992 Buffalo, N.Y. LETTER TO MAYOR OF NEW YORK Hon. David N. Dinkins Mayor, New York City City Hall New York, N.Y. Honorable Mayor Dinkins: I want to congratulate you in the project of renovating Bryant Park and placing statue and/or busts of the city's leading citizens - past and present - on display for the people to know its glorious past. The Tesla Memorial Society, Inc. would like to urge you to place a bust that is available of our mutual benefactor in Bryant Park. The bust or statue is by one of the world's greatest sculptors, Ivan Mestrovic who spent his last years in the U.S. Dr. Ljubomir Vujovic, our General Secretary for the New York- New Jersey Region, can apprise you about the details of this statue. We would like to have this accomplished in 1993 which is the Centenary of the Columbia Exposition - which was lit up for the first time with ALTERNATING CURRENT on a large scale. This was the precursor to the Niagara Falls being harnessed with Tesla's patents by George Westinghouse that led to the accelerated development of industrialization of the world. Nikola Tesla was a resident of your city all his adult life. He stayed at the famous hotels there and dined with the giants of industry of the late 19th and early 20th centuries - J.P. Morgan, Mark Twain, Johnson, the poet, Michael I. Pupin, Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia, etc. He fed the pigeons in Bryant Park and was an integral part of its ambience. Dr. Vujovic's address is: 1058 Hart St., Brooklyn, NY 11237; tel: (718) 417-5102. I thank you in advance for your serious consideration! Sincerely, cc: Wm. H. Terbo, Hon. Ch. Dr. L. Vujovic, Dr. M. Pezzulich Nicholas Kosanovich Dr. Dusan Kosovic, Dr. Michael Markovich, Dr. Goran Djuknic Carol Costa, Karen Klami P.S. Enclosed is our latest videotape that shows what he has done! * Excerpt from Leland I. Anderson book just printed . . . TESLA'S HONORARY DEGREE H(enry) Fairfield Osborn, Dean, Faculty of Pure Science, Columbia College in the City of New York. Osborn wrote to College President Seth Low in January, 1894, saying in part, "I have especially upon my mind two matters which I think will appeal to you very strongly. The first is connected with Mr. Hill of Nyack, and the second with Mr. Tesla of New York. I have learned recently that Mr. Hill is considered the leading mathematician in this country, and there seems to be little doubt that Mr. Tesla is the leading electrician. They both are in a measure connected with Columbia through Mr. Hill's lectures here, and through the fact that Mr. Tesla at Professor Pupin's and Professor Crocker's invitation gave his first electrical lecture in Columbia. So that we have already established a sympathetic relation with these great men. I spent an afternoon recently with Tesla, and regard him as one of the most distinguished men I have ever met. I happened to meet Professor Crocker shortly afterwards, and learned form him that he had spoken to you in regard to giving Tesla an Honorary Degree. I would like to support this in the most earnest manner. Poulton (Prof. of Biology at Oxford) tells me that Tesla was covered with honors while in England and France. We certainly must not allow any other University to anticipate us in honoring a man who lives under our very walls." In response to this, President Low recommended, in a letter dated February 5, 1894, to the Trustees, that the honorary degree of LL.D. should be conferred on Tesla. The degree was awarded in June, 1894. SOME TESLA MUSINGS I wish to announce that in connection with the commercial introduction of my inventions I shall tender professional services in the general capacity of consulting electrician and engineer. The near future, I expect with confidence, will be a witness of revolutionary departures in the production, transformation and transmission of energy, transportation, lighting, manufacture of chemical compounds, telegraphy, telephony and other arts and industries. In my opinion, these advances are certain to follow from the universal adoption of high-potential and high-frequency currents and novel regenerative processes of refrigeration to very low temperatures. Much of the old apparatus will have to be improved, and much of the new developed, and I believe that while furthering my own inventions, i shall be more helpful in this evolution by placing at the disposal of others the knowledge and experience I have gained. Special attention will be given by me to the solution of problems requiring both expert information and inventive resource work coming within the sphere of my constant training and predilection. I shall undertake the experimental investigation and perfection of ideas, methods and appliances, the devising of useful expedients and, in particular, the design and construction of machinery for the attainment of desired results. Any task submitted to and accepted by me, will be carried out thoroughly and conscientiously. Tesla Memorial Society, Inc. 453 Martin Road Buffalo, New York 14218 .
