Item Subject: sEV & NEV info sEVs and nEVs are terms we have developed on the EV List. sEVs are small EVs, they are less expensive, and accordingly have less performance/range/top speed. They are good for like what the 'city cars' of the 70's were. Something less than Hwy speeds, and generally range is less than 50 miles. Top speed is 45MPH or less. An example of this is a less expensive EV conversion kit like what is offered by Kaylor or Global Light and Power. A $2,000 conversion kit for a small vehicle using a lower voltage system. The battery voltage is less because there are less batteries (a 72 volt system is 72/6v 12 batteries). The voltage is less, thusly the top speed is less 45MPH. There are less batteries, thusly less lead or capacity and your range will be less 50 miles (more like 30miles). Because the type of system we are talking about means you are not driving at Fwy speeds, it is more efficient and treads lighter on the Earth. Some people desire this. It also uses the older style components, and thusly you can get a great price break as every else wants to VAROOOM on the Fwy. It would be a slower paced life style. Most smaller vehicles like the VW bug, Le car, the like, don't have much room for batteries. These lower voltage/less expensive systems work fine in these conversions. Definitely not for long trips. nEVs are neighborhood Electric Vehicles. They have even less top speed and range, and like a moped are made for 30MPH or less. But they are cheap, and great for tooling around the neighborhood, dashing to the market, things like that. These tread the lightest on the Earth. Sort of the Ultra light of EVs. Range is 20 Miles at most, usually 10Miles. Very little room for batteries. Usually gel cells are used. The energy densities are very low, but fun. A bicycle battery assist kit could have a better than 10 Mi range. ... Check the sEV and nEV portion of the EV Suppliers List. --- * Bruce Parmenter (Neely_Mail@hp0000.desk.hp.com) {Sunnyvale,CA,USA} * --- ....................................................................... Item Subject: EV Q & A Electric Vehicle Questions & Answers [Questions from a man making a video college piece on EVs] Q - What do you say to people who make the comment that they are worried that the battery charger will burn the breakers out in their homes when they plug in, or that there will be serious damage (fire, acid spills) in an accident. A - Generally, an EV uses a slow charge rate of about 10-15Amps overnight. That is the same as the way a washing machine, plugged into a 120VAC household outlet, uses power. I would ask if they are worried if their washing machine is going to burn the breakers out? I usually explain that EVs have many safety features designed into them (more so than most Gas cars) so that you can't drive it when it is plugged in, there is a kill switch readily available in the driving compartment that interrupts all power to the vehicle, and there are an extensive amount of fuses designed into the EV. To have a battery crack from an accident would have to be a considerable crash. The acid would leak on the ground, a drain under the EV. We carry a box of baking soda in the EV to neutralize it if there was such a crash. Any more of a crash, enough to smash all the batteries at one time, it wouldn't really matter, the passengers would be history anyway. I would ask if they are concerned of the battery that is in their gas car or their gas tank? Q - What would I say to the person watching the video we are creating, who does not know EVs, but wants to buy one? ------- cut here -------- ----------------------- Headers -------------------------------- From NEELY_MAIL@HP0000.desk.hp.com Sun Apr 30 19:53:31 1995 Received: from hp.com by mailgate.mail.aol.com with ESMTP (1.37.109.11/16.2) id AA066306011; Sun, 30 Apr 1995 19:53:31 -0400 Return-Path: Received: from opnmail1.corp.hp.com by hp.com with SMTP (1.37.109.15/15.5+ECS 3.3) id AA139996009; Sun, 30 Apr 1995 16:53:29 -0700 Received: from by opnmail1.corp.hp.com with SMTP (1.37.109.8/15.5+ECS 3.4 Openmail) id AA01033; Sun, 30 Apr 1995 16:53:04 -0700 From: NEELY_MAIL@HP0000.desk.hp.com X-Openmail-Hops: 1 Date: Sun, 30 Apr 95 16:51:00 -0700 Message-Id: <"d0tq-dx000000000*"@MHS> Subject: A Ton of EV info ...
