At a young age his family, friends and teachers encouraged him to learn more about great drummers and check out there many styles. Some of his many influences are: Max Roach, Buddy Rich, Elvin Jones, Gene Krupa, Cozy Cole, Louie Bellson, Carter Beauford, Billy Cobham, Steve Smith, Poppa Joe, Jones, Jonathan “sugarfoot” moffett, Dennis Chambers, Art Blakey, and John Blackwell Sr. and Jr. With a Gospel background Curtis soon, learned to incorporate these new styles of play, into his own style. His new style also helped out with R&B, ROCK, Neo-Soul, blue grass, smooth jazz and Dance. As he got older he discovered new talent and bands in the surrounding bay area. He became the backbeat of a local band in San Jose California, called “HORCHATA” where they released there first single on Green Gorilla records. Also, did several live recording with Gospel artist such as “The Clarke Sisters”, “Darrell Colley”, “The Hawkins singers”, and a host of other bay area recording artists. In 1992 Curtis did some work for MC-Hammer as a back-up drummer, that later helped him in getting local gigs in the bay area.
