Event Times and Event Room/Location Assignments

A Note to Event Coordinators

Event coordinators are requested to bring all of the necessary materials to run their event(s).  This includes already copied answer forms, keys, tests, and scientific and measuring equipment.  If anything is needed from John Jay High School, as far as equipment is concerned, please email your requests at least 1 week prior to the competition.  Regularly, these requests will be displayed below.

For construction events (boomilever, robot, planes, mission, sound of music) students will be asked to sign a paper with the statement below.  It may be "cut and pasted" from this site onto the score sheet, or can be on a separate page.

"I ____________________________________________ (student name(s) submit this technology device as a product of the science olympiad program at my school.  It was built entirely by student members of this year's team.  We have personally designed and constructed it, according to the rules set forth by Science Olympiad. Understanding the importance of honesty, integrity and sportsmanship, we have made every effort to adhere to the rules and the spirit of the competition."

Rule Clarifications
For official rule clarifications and corrections visit the official Science Olympiad Web-site.  High school teams are division "C".   CLICK HERE

Types of disqualification and their ranking:
  1. Teams whose device does not meet the required specifications outlined in the event rules will be ranked behind all those that do.
  2. Teams that meet the required specifications but did not impound by 9:00am will be ranked behind all those that meet the specifications, and impounded on time.
  3. Teams whose device both meets specifications and is impounded on time, but are acquire "run-time" penalties will be ranked above those mentioned in 1 and 2.
New York State Olympiad Rule on Teams that do not Compete in One or More Events:
  • Teams that do not compete in any event will be given one point more than the number of registered teams.  For the 2002-2003 regional competition, there are 23 teams registered.  Because of this, the assigned score for any event in which a team does not participate will be 24.
Mission Rule Clarifications: (Received from State Director 1/13/03)
  • The bell that is to be rung must be a traditional bell in shape and function. - it can not be electronic such as a door bell.
  • The pinwheel must be a standard pinwheel.  It can not be a modified fan.
  • The pinwheel may not be power driven.  It must be moved with air or some similar action.  Because of the small energy the turning pinwheel will have, a dead end will be allowed.  That is, the transfer that activates the pinwheel may also initiate the next energy transfer.
Robot Rule Clarifications: (Received from Dave Chason - Event Supervisor 1/22/03)
  • The competitors will not be allowed to touch the robot in any way after the 30 x 30 box is removed. If there is something (eg. a switch) that needs to be manually activated on the robot, this should be done PRIOR to the box being placed over the robot.  Any "opening" of robot arms needs to be done "robotically".  The students will be allowed to "warm-up" their robot for two minutes prior to their actual timed run.

Calculators - The NYS Rules (Posted 1/27/03 - Regional Coord.)

  • NO PROGRAMMABLE/GRAPHING CALCULATORS ALLOWED EVER!
  • Non-programmable calculators may be allowable depending on the event description based on the official rule book.
  • A scientific calculator is not necessarily programmable....( no TI-82's, 83's, 89's etc...)
  • This means that EVEN THOUGH the "Physics Lab" event states that students may use any type of calculator... the New York State rule PROHIBITS all programmable and graphing types... any other calculator -- for this event -- would be fine...
Boomilever Loading Block Information:
  • Two loading blocks will be available- one with the eyelet permanently installed on the block, and one with eye separate from the block (masses will be identical). Students may choose their loading block at the competition, but if they choose the 'unassembled' block, they must install it on the boom themselves.
  • Click here for pictures of the 2002-2003 loading blocks (Thanks to Steve Kluge of Fox Lane)
  • If you have questions about this years boomilever event e-mail skluge@bedford.k12.ny.us

Frequently Asked Questions

National Science Olympiad Code of Conduct

Student participants are expected to compete in tournament events with an honest effort to follow the rules and the spirit of the competition. The goal of competition is to give one's best effort while displaying honesty, integrity, and sportsmanship. Students, coaches, parents and guests are expected to display courtesy and respect toward Olympiad officials, other teams, and guests of the Olympiad. Failure to show honesty and/or courtesy by a participant, coach, or guest of the team may result in the disqualification of the team from that event, the entire tournament or future tournaments.

Cheating, Interference, and Vandalism Policies

CHEATING

(1) An individual who cheats during the competition will be penalized by disqualification of the team from that event. Disqualification results in a score that is one greater than the number of teams competing for that event.

(2) If cheating occurs by a team in more than one event, or in successive years, the team may be disqualified that year, or the following year, from the entire competition.

(3) If an event team, or team member, or anyone associated with the team, deliberately takes an action that impairs the ability of other teams to fairly complete, that team will be disqualified from the event and be awarded zero points. In addition, the event team member(s) involved in the incident, may be ineligible for any future Science Olympiad competitions. Furthermore, the teams may be penalized points not to exceed the value of two first place rankings.

INTERFERENCE

Penalty points may be assessed for the following:

1.    For a student, coach, teacher, chaperon or parent entering a building or area where events are set up for the competition or are being held, without proper authorization to do so, five (5) penalty points may be assessed.

Only those students actually competing in an event and those teachers who may be assigned to assist in the conducting of an event may enter areas where events are held. All other persons are to remain out of the building or the area at all times.

2.    For a student, coach, teacher, chaperone or parent interfering with or disrupting the conduct of an event, ten (10) penalty points may be assessed.

Note this policy applies to any person in attendance at the Olympiad.

VANDALISM AGREEMENT - Click here to download the agreement.

This form must be signed by both the School Principal and Coach of each team.  It must be submitted at on site registration.  No team will be allowed to compete without this signed form on file with the 2002-2003 Regional Coordinators.
