Thomas' Opinion of the Sugar Act
Thomas is a British Naval Customs Official.
"These foolish colonists treat the Sugar Acts as a game. Then they dare to
protest that they're not respected. You cannot lie, cheat and smuggle and expect
to be treated cordially by the mother country!
It's in the best interest of the colonies to keep England in sound financial
order by supporting the trade between themselves and the British West Indies,
and paying the extra duties on sugar products. After all, the King's treasury
was depleted by the enormous expense of fighting the French
and Indian War. This war protected the very lives of these whining colonists.
How ungrateful can they be?
Our "writs of assistance" gives us the
authority to board any ship we choose. Yet every day for me is another headache
as I listen to the complaining of the people on the docks. I'm just doing my
job to insure that the Crown collects the money it deserves. To me, these colonists
are nothing but a selfish lot of rabble!"
