 Our Hunt Family Tree

The primary ancestor that I've been able to trace back to is (1) Jonathan Hunt. Jonathan Hunt was born circa 1768 in Northampton Co., PA and died 23 August 1863 in Northampton Co., PA (Argus, Easton, PA). His wife was Susan who was born circa 1772 in PA.

These are the children of Jonathan Hunt and Susan:
  • Catherine Hunt b. 21 Dec 1799 at UMBT, NorCo., PA, married Jacob Collins b. circa 1794.
  • Daniel Hunt b. 3 October 1801 at UMBT, NorCo., PA, married Sarah A. (nee?) b. circa 1810 in NJ.
  • Joseph Hunt b. 15 Nov 1803 at UMBT, NorCo., PA d. 2 July 1865 at UMBT, NorCo., PA, married Mary J. "Polly" Adams b. 11 Dec 1807 at NorCo., PA d ?. Joseph is buried at Mt. Bethel Presbyterian Church Cemetery.
  • (2) Jacob Hunt b. 2 Dec 1805 at UMBT, Norco., PA d. 14 Nov 1884 at UMBT, NorCo., PA, married Rachel (nee?) b. Aug 1818 d. 30 Setp 1882 in UMBT, NorCo., PA. They are buried at Mt. Bethel Presbyterian church Cemetery and their stone is a large obelisk behind what used to be the church (currently used as the Slate Belt Museum). On the 1880 Federal Census of Upper Mount Bethel Township, they were found living in Johnsonville. (More on them in the next section.)
  • Israel Hunt b. 8 January 1808 at UMBT, NorCo., PA d. after 1880, married Caroline Labar b. circa 1813 at NorCo., PA. He was a farm laborer.
  • William Hunt b. 13 Dec 1816 at NorCo., PA, married Catherine (nee?) b. circa 1828. He was a farm laborer.


(2) Jacob Hunt and his wife Rachel lived in Upper Mount Bethel Township, Northampton Co., PA, and had the following:
  • David Wilson Hunt b. circa 1837, lived in Oakland, Michigan (1870 Census).
  • Wellington Hunt b. circa 1839, lived in Columbia, NJ (1870 Census).
  • Edward Hunt b. circa 1842
  • Eliza Hunt b. circa 1844
  • Daniel Hunt b. circa 1846, married Unknown who died before 1870 and had: Arlington Hunt b. circa 1867. Daniel remarried on 31 May 1871 to Hannah Marie Ross (widower to Unknown Coleman), and they had: Edward Hunt b. cir. 1872; Franklin Hunt b. cir. 1876; Clark Hunt b. cir. 1879; Lucy Hunt b. cir. 1881; and Mary Hunt b. cir. 1887.
  • (3) Abraham S. Hunt b. August 1851 d. 9 March 1932 at Mount Bethel, PA OBIT Abraham Hunt, married around 1882-1885 to Angeline Ruch DeCue, b. 15 May 1843 at Flicksville, PA and d. 20 Jan 1910 at UMBT, PA OBIT Angeline Hunt. Angeline was the widow of Jacob DeCue who d. 30 April 1882, aged 59 years, 7 months and 22 days. She was buried at the "1860" cemetery, Stone Church, PA with Jacob DeCue.


(3) Abraham Hunt lived in the Mount Bethel area for most of his life, but was found on the 1870 Federal Census living in Oakland, Michigan (25 July 1870). He and his father, Jacob, were farming out there along with his brother David's family. I wasn't able to locate Abraham in 1880, so I am not sure if he was ever married before he married Angeline. We do know that Abraham was a founder of the Mount Bethel Volunteer Fire Co., and there is a plaque with his name on at the fire hall.

Abraham and Angeline had one child:
  • (4) DeForest "Dick" Hunt b. 2 April 1886 at Johnsonville, UMBT, Norco., PA d. 1937 at Mount Bethel, PA, married 6 April 1907 at Portland, PA to Nellie Bly Compton b. 22 Nov 1889 in Morristown, Warren Co., NJ d. 1 Jan 1947 at East Bangor, PA. Please see my DAR Lineage page for a photo.


These are the children of DeForest and Nellie (Compton) Hunt:
  • (5) Frederic DeForrest Hunt b. 23 July 1908 at Mt. Bethel, PA d. 18 April 1986 at Easton Hospital, married at Portland, PA on 28 October 1931 to Muriel Groner Warrick b. 4 May 1912 at East Bangor, PA d. 19 August 1992 at Easton Hospital. Muriel was the daughter of Albert and Rosa Ellen (Groner) Warrick. They had six children, all living. Fred worked at textile mills and they moved several times. Though they lived mostly in the Slate Belt area, they also lived at North Carolina and North Wales, PA.
  • Evelyn Hunt b. 10 July 1910 at Mt. Bethel, PA d. 19 Jan 1992 at Phoenix, AZ. She married first to Paul Ford; divorced with no children. Married second to Howard F. Schaumberger b. 1909 d. 1990 and had no children.
  • Adra Hunt b. 1914 at Mt. Bethel, PA d. 1942, married to Robert Strunk. They had one child, Robert Strunk.
  • Elwood Hunt b. 16 April 1926 at Mt. Bethel, PA d. 20 July 1988, married Arlene Clause b. ? d. 2 February 1999. They lived in Palmer Township. They had two sons, living.
