Randy Sandke, trumpet; Dan Barrett, trombone; Brian Ogilvie, soprano and tenor saxophones, clarinet; Billy Mitchell, tenor saxophone; Mark Shane, piano; James Chirillo, guitar; Bob Haggart, bass; Joe Ascione, drums
Despite the title, this CD is clearly entrenched in the Dixieland/mainstream slot; even though Joe plays with accuracy, his drumming style has little in common with that of the great Buddy Rich. That said, the twelve well-known tunes are entertainingly played by this highly experienced group, with the bright trumpet work of Sandke and the attractive somber trombone of Barrett providing the outstanding solos. The rest of the group are above average, and they each get opportunities to shine, with the bass playing of the late Bob Haggart joining Joe's drumming to make a relaxed rhythm section. This is a happy swinging session which many mainstream lovers will enjoy.
