The Earth Science Department at Parkland High School offers students many opportunities in the earth sciences.  The full year earth science course is offered in 9th grade.  Students may take Honors, GHP, CP, or Applied Earth Science.  There is something for everyone!  Four earth science electives are offered each semester, Oceanography, Geology of National Parks, Astronomy and Meteorology.

Earth Science class is a full year course.  We study earth science using an approach that views the earth as a system which includes the geosphere, hydrosphere, atmosphere, biosphere, and cryosphere.  We will begin the year with a study of density and heat transfer and their connection to the earth sciences and everyday life.

Parkland High School is a GLOBE and students have opportunities to collect meteorological data.

My Oceanography class studies salinity, temperature, density, and ocean stratification.  Also, currents, underwater topography, sands and their origins, phases of the moon and tides.  In addition, there will be some marine study including a starfish dissection.   In addition, we take a field trip to Sandy Hook, N.J. Ocean Institute in the fall and spring of each school year.  See the field trip page for more details and some pictures.
