Books relating to the environment or nature
One of the reasons for my starting this web site was the difficulty that I had in finding books to read in this genre. Here is a list of some of my favorites, as well as related web sites. I would welcome suggestions on either books or web sites with reviews. Please email me
The following list is in the order of which I originally read these titles, so that the newer entries are always added to the bottom.
  • Murray, John A. American Nature Writing Sierra Club Books. Published annually since 1984, although I have not yet seen the 1999 edition, these books includes works by a variety of well known as well as new writers. Some of the material has been published perviously and some is new.I have been introduced to many authors this way.
  • Quammen, David Song of the Dodo
  • Weidensaul, Scott Seasonal Guide to the Natural Year © 1993, Fulcrum Publishing, Boulder Colorado.
  • Palmer, Thomas [illustrations and endpaper map by Ann Powers] Landscape with reptile : rattlesnakes in an urban world New York : Ticknor & Fields, © 1992. Currently out of print, but many copies are available at the Boston Public Library. Other recent writing of Tom's can be found at the Friends of the Blue Hills web site
  • Bass, Rick The Book of Yaak © 1996, Houghton Mifflin Company, New York, New York
  • Tougias, Michael J. New England Wild Places © 1997, Covered Bridge Press, North Attleboro Massachusetts
  • Bennett, Dean B. The Forgotten Nature of New England © 1996, Down East Books, Camden Maine.
  • Trimble, Stephen Words From the Land, expanded edition © 1995, University of Nevada Press, Reno NV.

Each selection is preceeded with a biographical sketch of the author which includes interesting commentary about how they write and a photograph often taken by the editor.

  • Wessels, Tom [Etchings and illustrations by Brian Cohen] Reading the Forested Landscape, A Natural History of New England © 1997, The Countryman Press Woodstock VT.
  • Finch, Robert Death of a Hornet and Other Cape Cod Essays© 2000, Counterpoint, Washington D.C.

Wonderful collection of short essays most of which have been previously published in other books or periodicals. Robert Finch is a wonderful author who writes in such a way that the reader is at once marvelling in the simplicity of his writing and the depth of his understanding. Many of his essays involve very common things to which he brings a level of detail that immerses the reader into the setting, describing things that most of us would undoubtedly miss and offering explainations without sounding preachy or text bookish.
