Ellis Island

The ferry goes to both Liberty Island and Ellis Island.  Between 1892 and 1954, approximately 12 million steerage and third class steamship passengers who entered the United States through the port of New York were legally and medically inspected at Ellis Island.  My great-grandparents on my mother's side all came through Ellis Island just before WW II.  In fact, my grandmother's parents MET at Ellis Island!  It turned out their fathers knew each other through their business connections, but they probably never would have met, otherwise.  Cool, huh?

Reopened on September 10, 1990,  the Main Building on Ellis Island is now a museum.  We were too tired, after wandering all over Liberty Island to visit Ellis Island, but next time we will!  We have family listed on the American Immigrant Wall of Honor!  THAT we gotta see someday!
