The "trail" was the gully formed by water that had come down the side of the mountain during the spring run-off. It was very rocky, and very steep. Finally we hit a level place, and took a look around. Lots of young birch, oak, maple, and wild strawberry plants carpeting the ground, with tons of wild blueberry bushes all over the place. Picking a grassy spot we sat for a while, just chatting. The path curved back and forth, and we scrambled up again. I was thinking I was crazy again, but Nathaniel was having fun being a mountain goat. Up a little bit more and it leveled out again to what Nathaniel dubbed "Fern Gully" - the side of the mountain flowed down and away from us in folds, with one wide and shadowed gully dropping off from the side of our path. From the side of the path all the way down the sides of the gully was a carpet of fern plants, in among the birch trees. The sun streamed through the branches of the canopy, and in the distance, between the tree trunks, we could see the folds of the Berkshire range, as it continued to the north and west. God's cathedral, right in front of us... |
