At first, it seemed the easiest part of our hike so far. It was wider and even grassy. But then it turned and started twisting up the side of the mountain. It narrowed, and I started to wonder if it had really ended and we just hadn't noticed.

We came to a wet patch, that Nat dubbed The Frog Pond, and he spent a few fun minutes watching a tiny little frog friend hop into the water and swim around. Carefully we edged around The Frog Pond, and went up the ever narrowing trail.

It very quickly got very steep, and we were scrambling again. All through this area we saw signs of the fire, bits of burned wood on the trail, burned branches, and then, across the trail, the partially burned trunk of a tree. The trail was so steep here that when we sat on the tree and rested, our feet didn't touch the ground! We could see out over the whole valley though. The sky was starting to turn pink, and the valley was in deep shadow.
