ultimate measure of a journalism program's success is the record of its
graduates. Ours have done very well and we are very proud of them.

Alumni work at 29 newspapers, specialty publications and broadcast
newsrooms throughout the state: The Hartford Courant, The (Manchester)
Journal Inquirer, The (Willimantic) Chronicle, The (New London) Day,
The (Danbury) News-Times, The (Meriden) Record-Journal, The Bristol
Press, The (Norwalk) Hour, The (Waterbury) Republican, The Middletown
Press, The (New Britain) Herald, The New Haven Register, The Norwich
Bulletin, The (Torrington) Register Citizen, The Stamford Advocate,
The Litchfield County Times, The Simsbury News, The Hartford Advocate,
The (Colchester) Regional Standard, The Fairfield Citizen-News, The
New Milford Times, Imprint Newspapers, ESPN, WELI, WILI, WTIC-TV, WVIT-TV,
the Connecticut Law Tribune and Hartford Business Journal. In addition,
one alumna of the Class of 1994 is associate editor of a multimedia,
CD-rom publication for children, Newsline. Her job is an example of
the new opportunities that are emerging for journalism graduates.
Our alumni form a substantial network within the state, which helps
with job placements. About 20 alumni work at the Hartford Courant alone,
including
a vice president, a deputy managing editor and an editorial writer.
The Journal-Inquirer in Manchester employs nine alumni. At The (New
London) Day, there are seven alumni, including the deputy managing editor
and a bureau chief.
The department frequently gets calls from editors who want to hire
our graduates, and our interns frequently are hired by their internship
sites at graduation.
Several of our in-state alumni are successful freelancers. One writes
fulltime for The New York Times and The Boston Globe. One is a contributing
editor to Connecticut magazine and writes frequently for The New York
Times and other publications. Another has written two successful books
on health issues, edits a subscription newsletter, writes for newspapers
and magazines, and recently produced an award-winning,national public
television documentary on women and heart disease.

Outside Connecticut
Our graduates work for respected publications and broadcast facilities
throughout the United States. Although it's difficult to keep track
of alumni as they move around the country, our records indicate that
we have graduates working at: The New York Times, The Boston Globe,
The Providence Journal-Bulletin, The (Lowell) Sun, The Orlando Sentinel,
The (Los Angles) Daily News, The Dallas Morning News, The Detroit News,
The (Johnstown, Penn.) Tribune-Democrat, The Poughkeepsie (N.Y.) Journal,
The Daily Hampton (Mass.) Gazette, The Philadelphia Daily News, The
(Pottstown, Penn.) Mercury, The Savannah Morning News, The Millerton
(N.Y.) News, The (Tavernier, Fla.) Free Press, ABC News, WABC-TV in
New York City, WMAR-TV in Baltimore, a Japanese television network,
Time magazine, Institutional Investor, The National Journal, Diagnostic
Imaging magazine, Fabrics and Furnishings International in New York,
City Limits magazine in Manhattan and Exchange Publications in Washington,
D.C. Two of our alumni, Robert Kaplan and Lawrence Rifkin, are fulltime
freelance foreign correspondents and authors covering the Balkans and
the Middle East.
Our graduates have been successful in these jobs. Three alumni are
editors at The New York Times. One is a vice president of The Boston
Globe. One is science editor of The Orlando Sentinel. One has reported
on Africa for the Dallas Morning News. At the Philadelphia Daily News,
one alumna is features editor and another is a television columnist
whose work is syndicated through the Knight-Ridder Newspapers. At one
small weekly, The (Tavernier, Fla.) Free Press, one of our graduates
was hired right out of school as assistant managing editor. Our alumna
at Time is a Washington correspondent. At the National Journal in Washington,
D.C., our alumnus is senior vice president. He is also on the management
committee of PoliticsNow, an online publication of The Washington Post,
ABC News and The National Journal.
The Journalism Department is proud of the accomplishments of its alumni
and of the contributions they have made, and continue to make, to journalism.

Keeping in Touch
Members of the department like to keep in touch with alumni. We often
can help them when they are looking for jobs, looking for good interns,
or hiring new employees. They often can help us when we are trying to
place students in internships or place graduates in jobs. We also value
their advice. And we miss them.
