Ama Dablam

Ama Dablam

Ama Dablam (6,814m/22,355ft): this magnificent mountain towers above the trail beyond Pangboche.  There are serveral origins given for the name Ama Dablam.  One says that it refers to the necklace of turquoise or coral usually worn by married women.  With a little imagination, it is possible to visualize shoulders, a head, and outstretched arms, with a lump of glacier in the right spot for a necklace.  Note the landslide below the mountain.  It occurred in 1977, and sent a great wave of water down the valley, wiping out bridges below.
