Khumbu

The Khumbu region has been a magnet for mountaineers, adventurers, and trekkers ever since its opening to foreigners in the 1950s.  They are drawn to Sagarmatha National Park, home of a myriad of beautiful peaks including four of Nepal's 8,000m mountains and the world's highest mountain Mt. Everest.

I trekked as a member of an organized group sponsored by the non-profit Himalayan Explorers Club.  Led by our guide, Pemba Sherpa, we followed the popular route from the village of Lukla through increasingly higher alpine valleys up to the north peak of Kala Pattar or 'black rock'.  Located at 5,600m/18,373ft, this peak offers a breathtaking and up close view of Mt. Everest and the panorama below.  After reaching the summit, we returned to Dingboche.
