Tengboche Monastery (3,860m/12,664ft): Tengboche is a cultural and religious center in the Khumbu.  Boys are sent here from all over the Khumbu to study Buddhism.  The gompa was established in 1916 by Lama Gulu at the request of the Abbot of Rongbuk, but was rebuilt in 1934 due to earthquake damage and again in 1989 due to fire damage.
