1997 Massachusetts Statewide Drill Pictures
The Massachusetts Statewide Drill on December 6th was a great success. Through
Tom Kinahan, N1CPE, the Massachusetts State RACES Radio officer, pictures were
taken at MEMA Framingham and given to me to put here on the Eastern
Massachusetts ARES/RACES/SKYWARN Homepage and I thank him for allowing
me to put the pictures on this web page.
This picture shows the drill in action. Steve Schwarm, W3EVE, and Karen
Brothers, N1XAK, take reports from ARES RACES and SKYWARN stations from
across the state, and around Southern New England.
More of the drill in action. From left to right, Steve Finks, K1KZE, John
Tommaney, head of MEMA Communications, and Greg Anderson, MEMA Framingham
dispatcher, work drill issues as if it had been an actual hurricane.
Joe Walsh, active MEMA dispatcher on duty, answers the phone and assists
with the drill at MEMA HQ. Dispatchers are on duty 24 hours a day, 7
days a week at MEMA Framingham HQ.
The above pictures show some of the operators that participated at the
served agencies for the 1997 Massachusetts Statewide SET as well as those
who participated at the meeting at MEMA Framingham that followed the drill.
Starting in the back row and working from left to right is Dennis Zonia, K1VSG,
Western Massachusetts Section Emergency Coordinator, Mike Barill, N1PSE, Area III
East RACES Radio Officer, Dennis Brothers, KE6DPL, who assisted MEMA Framingham
operations, Steve Rodowicz, N1SR, candidate for the Area III West RACES Radio Officer
Position, William Dohr, KB0UYO, candidate for ARES DEC Training Coordinator, Tom Kinahan,
N1CPE, Massachusetts State RACES Radio Officer, Steve Schwarm, W3EVE, Eastern
Massachusetts Section Emergency Coordinator, Bob Mims, WA1OEZ, Area II RACES Radio
Officer, Karen Brothers, N1XAK, who assisted with MEMA Framingham operations, Robert
Macedo, KD1CY, ARES SKYWARN Coordinator for NWS Taunton, and SEMCARES Emergency
Coordinator, and Tony Duarte, N1XRS, Assistant Emergency Coordinator for SEMCARES.
In this picture is an old style HF rig that MEMA Framingham has at their disposal
when disaster strikes. It has old style tube technology because in the unlikely
event of a nuclear disaster most of the solid state communications equipment would
be destroyed.
In this picture is the 147.15 Framingham Repeater system. This repeater is located
and kept at MEMA Framingham, so when their is an active RACES situation, and you
can't get a hold of MEMA Framingham, the 147.15 repeater is the next best alternative.
The drill was a great success and I'm glad that the participation for the drill went
soo well and that communications across the state and between ARES, RACES, and SKYWARN
was soo cohesive and the cooperation was excellent. Hopefully, next year's drill
will be as successful as this year's drill.
Respectfully Submitted,
Robert Macedo (KD1CY)
