Exam School Facts and Figures - 2016/2017
Exam School 2016/2017 Admissions
We have Exam School Admission stats going back over 15 years. We have built a rather extensive database of GPAs, test scores, and rankings, because we follow up with all our students to see how they scored on the test, and to find out the results of their applications.
We recently conducted an analysis of test scores going back to 2002, and we found some very interesting data points:
- Test scores that would have ranked a student in the 100s for admission to Boston Latin School in 2002, would now rank that student in the 500s (too low to be admitted to BLS).
- We found instances in our data where students had identical GPAs (A+) and even though the students in 2010 scored slightly higher than the students in 2002, the students in 2010 were ranked 400 points below the students from 2002.
- No student of ours this year with a GPA below an A was admitted to Boston Latin School.
Latin School Offers BPS Students 69 hours of Free ISEE Prep
The Boston Latin School Alumni Association has long funded a program called the Exam Schools Initiative. The program is by invitation only to 1,000 Boston Public School 5th graders, based on scores on the MCAS and Advanced Work tests.
Last year BLSA funded a program, which offered 69 hours of free ISEE test prep, at Boston Latin School, starting in August, and ending just before the test in November.
Of the 1,000 students invited, there were seats for approximately 750 students. These were some of Boston Public Schools best and brightest students, many from the highly regarded Advanced Work Program.
If Latin School feels that the best and brightest students need almost 70 hours of ISEE prep in order to get into the exam schools, then clearly we have been onto something for a while!
This program is making a dramatic impact on who is admitted to the exam schools (and who is not admitted).
BLS Class of 2009 was 40% Smaller
Ms. Anne's son was a member of the Boston Latin School Class of 2009. His class lost about 40% of its students in the 6 years he was at Latin. Here are the facts:
- The incoming 7th grade class in 2003 had approximately 450 students.
- In 9th grade the class of 2009 added approximately 100 new members.
- The graduating class of 2009 contained approximately 350 students (this we verified by counting the names of the students who graduated).
- Out of a pool of approximately 550 students in total, there were approximately 350 graduates = a nearly 40% drop out rate.
Our ISEE Prep program not only prepares students for admission to exam and private schools, we give students a solid foundation in math, vocabulary, reading comprehension and study skills, so that they have the tools they need to succeed.
