Many and various clinical situations require prolonged intravenous access for antibiotic therapy, chemotherapy or nutritional therapy. Specialized catheters are available that require surgical insertion which are made to last for weeks to months or even longer, if needed. These catheters provide significant patient comfort by avoiding the need for repeated needle punctures, a particularly important consideration in the pediatric age group. Adults with chronic illnesses find that long term catheters make their treatments much more tolerable. Choice of catheter type is individualized based on patient need.
Permanent Pacemaker Insertion:
Most heart rhythm disturbances are managed with medication. Frequently, however, certain abnormal rhythms will not respond to drugs and must be treated by insertion of a permanent pacemaker. This is a relatively minor surgical procedure done under local anesthesia. Your medical doctors will define very carefully your particular type of rhythm disturbance so that a very specific type of pacemaker can be chosen to meet your specific requirements.
