98 Pace Car - News Flash

Late Breaking News

One of our members just received a call from the Customer Relations Department at the Bowling Green, KY plant to inquire about the satisfaction of the recent purchase of a 98 Corvette Indy Pace Car.  All C5 Owners, be on the lookout for a call from Bowling Green. They really want to know what you think about the C5 and what changes you would suggest to make it better.

Mid America Designs, Inc. is planning a Special Pace Car Theme for their Silver Anniversary as part of FunFest’s 5th annual celebration on September 12-13, 1998.  Don’t miss this opportunity to participate in what will certainly be the largest gathering of Corvette Indy Pace Cars from 1978, 1986, 1995 and 1998.

News Items

Thank-you to Chevrolet, the National Corvette Museum, The Bowling Green Assembly Plant and the Official C5 Registry for providing this most exciting and interesting information for the 98 Corvette Indy Pace Car enthusiast!

Chevrolet is planning a total of 1163 Corvette Indy Pace Cars.  Of these 1163, 5 are GM Pilot Cars with Automatic Transmissions, which will not be sold.  1158 (547 6-Speed, 611 Automatic) will be made available to the public for sale in one fashion or another.  Specifically, 1106 will be available in the USA and  52 will be exported out of the USA (37 International, 15 Canada).  A special note should be made that the exported units may be required to have Magnesium Wheels and not the standard Yellow Painted Wheels.

Specific to the 82nd running of the Indianapolis 500, there will be 105 Corvette Indy Pace Cars used out of the 1106 available, as Festival and VIP cars, supposedly available for sale by selected dealers throughtout the country after the race.    3 additional cars will be designated Official Track-Duty Pace Cars.  More information to come on the Track, Festival and VIP Cars!

It is expected that GM will have available in the next two weeks or so, a complete statistical accounting of the 98 Corvette Indy Pace Car VIN Numbers, Job Numbers and Pace Car Sequence Numbers.  This information should prove equally exciting to share with other enthusiasts.

Did you Know?

The Chevrolet Corvette assembly plant in Bowling Green, Kentucky uses a “Just in Time” Inventory Control System.  That means, the Engine, Transmission and Seats for your 98 Corvette Indy Pace Car didn’t actually arrive at the plant until the night before, if your Corvette was built in the morning of your Build Date; or the morining of, if your Corvette was built in the afternoon of your Build Date.

In some cases of early 98 Corvette Indy Pace Cars, there is a Window Sticker from the factory that states:

1998 CORVETTE CONVERTIBLE

THIS LABEL IS AFFIXED FOR SHIPPING PURPOSES ONLY BECAUSE COMPLETE VEHICLE PRICING INFORMATION WAS NOT AVAILABLE AT TIME OF SHIPMENT

THIS VEHICLE IS NOT FOR SALE, NOR SHOULD IT BE DISPLAYED UNTIL A MANUFACTURER’S PRICE LABEL WITH COMPLETE SUGGESTED RETAIL PRICE INFORMATION IS AFFIXED

The 98 Corvette Indy Pace Car comes with a box containing additional decals for the car.  There are three decals, an instruction sheet and a decal installation spatula in the box.  The “Corvette Banner” for the windshield states, NOTICE TO CONSUMER: “NOT TO BE INSTALLED IN REGIONS PROHIBITED BY LOCAL RESTRICTIONS”.  The “Official Pace Car” door decals state “DECAL FRT S/D NA 10405314 2”.  If the dealer did not install the decals, then you will need to call the Chevrolet Customer Service Center at 1.800.222.1020 to request a copy of the installtion instructions that contain the placement measurements.  These measurements were left off the reverse side of the installation instructions in the box.

The Yellow Wheels when shipped from the factory did not have the Center Caps installed.  These caps came in a box marked “CORVETTE PACE CAR CENTER CAPS”.  There should be some handwritten information on the box containing a Date and Initials.
