Greek temples expressed the Greek anthropomorphic religion, they represented the main hall of a house, the house of a god. Within the temple a statue was the definitive art form while frescoes often adorned the interior walls.

Architectural space was defined by a system of urban planning using geometric measurements to ensure the natural placement of temples in the landscape. Order was determined from a single fixed point at the Propylaea (threshold to the precinct) so that the volumes of the Parthenon and Erectheion were apparent.

Distant features and changes in elevation of the land were considered an integral part of the composition.
