At the depot

When you hear the same Enya song twice on the Home Depot muzak, you know you've been spending too much time there.

We're not even into the house yet; we won't close until Thursday. We've just been getting all our painting supplies together so that we can ideally have the place painted by the end of this weekend, because we'll be moving the following weekend. Excitement excitement.

Sox

We went to see the Red Sox last night. Pedro pitched a good game, there were 2 home runs, and they shut out the Devil Rays, breaking Terri's record as a jinx. Anyway, it was fun to see them actually play well in person. It was really cold, though (about 33). As with most sporting events, Terri was the driving force in getting me to go, but I like the Red Sox. It's fun to cheer for underdogs, and they're perennially underdogs, but it's also fun to cheer for teams that win, and they are a really great team. And since they're in the American League, they almost never play the Pirates, so there's no conflict of loyalties.

We also got our commitment letter from the bank yesterday, saying that they really will give us the mortgage(s) we applied for. So that's good news. It means there's not much short of a bona fide disaster that would keep us from getting the place at this point.

more changes, more packing

My parents were in town this past weekend because it was April's last performance at Boston Ballet. Things are starting to get a little sad on the sibling departure front.

It was sunny today, and deceptively cold. We went to the gym, bought some furniture items, and packed. We hit box #40 (!) and called it a day.

Things are going well with Operation Homestead. We have signed the purchase and sale agreement. While we don't have anything official from the bank yet, they've verbally said that everything looks good. Well, other than the fact that their appraisal came in at less than we're paying. It's a small enough difference that we won't have a hard time making up the difference, and too small to negotiate much with the seller at this point.

Salon nails exactly how I feel about Dave Eggers

...in this article about his posse's new publication:

We'll see how it goes. My take on Eggers is that he's an interesting and occasionally inspired writer, but his unacknowledged significance is that he's one of the most important graphic designers of his generation. In fact, although his aesthetic is fairly reactionary and at times unbearably twee, he has a rare talent for the arcane art of typesetting and publication design.
