Original Music After Hours Reality Check Magazine A Season in Methven Our Host

In the thirty years or so that I've been writing music, I'd never written a country song. Until August of 2002, that is. Then one afternoon, the words "I've Been to Guerrero" came out of nowhere and demanded I write a song about them.

Well, as is usually the case when that happens, it didn't take long and it turned out to be a lot of fun -- after all, it's not very often I get to rhyme Guerrero with Saugero (not to mention Ford Ranchero)!

When I got around to recording the song, in mid-November of 2002, I got a little stuck on the details of the arrangement -- it was starting to sound mighty stiff and un-country-music-like -- until my darling wife commented, "You've got plenty of rhythm in there, already." After that, the rest of it just fell into place.

It's pretty much low comedy, rather than high art, but I like the way it turned out. I'll bet you will too.

As my wife put it, "I think Jimmy Buffet would be proud of you."

I produced, arranged and engineered the song and I sing lead and play acoustic guitars, DR-707 and Korg Triton.

Well, I've been to Guerrero,
Where they have Saguaro
                         E
As tall as a pretty tall tree,
But the inside of Rosie's
Bodega bordello
                                A
Held all of the sights that I'd see.

          A
Yes, I've been to Guerrero,
And I bought a sombrero,
                          D
But I didn't come for the clime.
  E
I spent all my money
On them senoritas;
                   A
Havin' a miserable time.

    D A
I'm not sure just what I was tryin' to do;
    D A
I'm not sure what I hoped to find,
    D A
And maybe that's 'cause I was trying to forget
  E A
I only had you on my mind.

Yes, I've been to Guerrero
In my Ford Ranchero,
And all the way down there I cried,
I could not forget
The way that you left me,
Though you'd best believe that I tried.

I'm not sure just what I was tryin' to do..

Yes, I've been to Guerrero.
Just a caballero
Drinkin' tequila with lime,
But the memories of you
Well, they still haven't faded.
Perhaps I'll forget you next time.

So, I'm going to Guerrero..
