Remembering the Rutland - Remembering the Milk Trains New York Central Railroad Image courtesy of Bob's Photos The New York Central Railroad fielded a huge fleet of milk and express refrigerator cars. The milk car in this undated photo was built in 1925 as car number 8040, one of sixty cars in the number series 8000-8059. At some point, probably by 1939, the cars in this series were renumbered into the 5740-5799 series, of which there were 53 members in 1947. The inside length of this car was 49'-4" and it features plug-type doors, as opposed to the hinged, reefer-style doors that were more commonly used. I am not aware of any model ever produced that replicates this style of NYC milk car. |
