Remembering the Rutland - Remembering the Milk Trains New York Central Railroad Image courtesy of Bob's Photos The New York Central Railroad fielded a huge fleet of milk cars (I would venture to say that it was the largest single fleet of milk cars owned by any single railroad, perhaps any single company). The milk car in this undated photo was a member of series 6401-6660, of which there were 224 members in 1947. Its inside length was 49'-2" and its length over buffers was 53'-8". It features the more common, reefer-style, hinged doors. In keeping with the prototype, a large number of brass models of this type of car has been imported over the years. Alco Models (HO), NJ International (O, HO and N) and Railworks have all imported brass models of this style of NYC milk car. Southwind imported an S scale version. |
