The Royal Family’s Christmas cards are popular with collectors as they usually contain signatures with a photograph and look handsome in a frame. You have to be very careful, as many of the cards of the Queen and Prince Philip and those of Prince Charles and Princess Diana are done by AUTOPEN. Generally, cards signed by Charles and Diana, and addressed to the recipient on the card are authentic. Autopenned cards are still wonderful collector’s items, but they should be less expensive. Collectors should consult James Lowe’s article, “Royal Autopens a royal headache for collectors’ in the Dec. 1997 issue of “Autograph Collector” (909-734-9636) for helpful information. For a fee, James Lowe can authenticate royal items. Unless otherwise noted, Christmas cards have a royal insignia on the outside and open to a two-sided card with the greeting, “with best wishes for Christmas and The New Year” on the left and a photograph on the right.
