monchie's cities
the relationship of monchie's two favorite cities, new york and philadelphia, is sort of like the relationship that the u.s.a. has with canada. similar to the american attitude toward its neighbor to the north, new yorkers are hardly aware that philadelphia even exists, while philadelphians are completely obsessed with new york.
to put it another way, new york is the arnold schwarzenegger of american cities, and philadelphia is the rodney dangerfield -- it never gets any respect!
but monchie likes 'em both. he adores the utter wackiness of new york and the lovable homeyness of philadelphia. he criticizes the homicidal drivers of new york (particularly the cabbies) and the charmingly corrupt politicians of philadelphia.
of course, monchie likes other cities as well, such as:
montréal - something like a typical north american city dubbed into french, montréal has its own brand of franco-american looniness. also its own language, which sounds like french spoken with a jersey accent.
san francisco - anyone who doesn't love san francisco is either depressingly dull or hopelessly hetero. maybe both. besides being the land over the rainbow for gay men, san francisco is also the country's most beautiful big city and one of its most cosmopolitan and ethnically diverse, with an asian population of around 30%.
paris - ahh, par-ee, one hasn't lived till one has visited the city of son et lumiére.
amsterdam - the loosest city on the other side of the ocean, where window shopping means something else entirely.
