monchie's trains...
new attraction!
monchie inherited his love of trains from his father, who was a car inspector for the pennsylvania railroad. monchie's dad worked on trains like the one pictured above, technically called an mp54 but known to monchie and his family as "the big red cars." mp54 electric m.u. (multiple unit) cars were used mostly in commuter service in the philadelphia and new york/north jersey areas, and here one is seen stopping at haverford, pa, on the paoli local, known colloquially as the "main line." (yes, that main line, as in the place where rich folks live.)
the choo-choo that monchie takes the most these days is duke ellington and billy strayhorn's celebrated "a train," three of which are pictured here by jamaica bay in queens. monchie doesn't get out to this end of the line all that often, but he does recommend a ride out to the rockaways if you're visiting the big apple. and on the way back, you can get off at the howard beach station and check out mr. gotti's neighborhood.
...and
trolleys
monchie actually rode this exact trolley car to high school. now, he knows the first question you wanna ask is, "how old is monchie?" well, the truth of the matter is that this trolley (pictured here at drexel hill, pa, in the mid sixties) was in regular service on septa's media and sharon hill lines until about the late seventies or early eighties.
