Nano Technology

Nano-programs are programs that instruct your available nanobots to perform a variety of actions that, in most cases, benefit you and your fellow players, and harm monsters.

To upload a nano-program to your NCU's passive storage (i.e. learn how to use that particular program), right-click the nano-crystal in your inventory. You can purchase new nano-crystals from vendors and machines - make sure that you only purchase programs suited for your profession and your skill levels (Shift-left-click a program to see a description). If you have the required skills and abilities, the nano-crystal will transfer the program to your NCU. The program will now be accessible from your programs window (see The Programs Window section).

Nano-programs use nano-energy (see The Stats View), and you can only execute a program if you have enough nano-energy. To run a program on a player or monster, target that player or monster (see Targeting) before right-clicking the program in the programs window.

You can attack a monster using nano-programs: to do so, target the monster, and run an attack-program (if available). Combat will initiate as described in the Combat section (see section about combat). However, your character will not automatically run further programs; you will need to do so yourself.

To run a program, your character needs to stand still, and not be interrupted, for as long as it takes to run the program. If you move your character, or your character is attacked, the execution of the program will be interrupted, and you will need to start again.

Nanotechnology in AO

On Rubi-Ka, everyone can use nanotechnology, be they a brutish Atrox Enforcer or a mysterious Nano Meta-Physician. While there exists a series of general nano formulas that everyone is able to learn, each profession has its own, distinct set of nano formulas which other professions are unable to learn. In general, the profession-specific NFs reflect what a profession is best at: the doctor gets many healing NFs; soldiers get NFs that help them survive in combat; the nanotechnician gets powerful damage-dealing NFs. The general NFs that are available to all are considered to be less effective than the profession-specific NFs.

To learn a nano formula, the character needs to have a nano crystal in which the formula is stored. When the character meets the skill requirements of the crystal (using one or more of the nanotechnology skills), she becomes able to learn the crystal. From then on, as long as the character has enough nano points and continues to meet the NF requirements, she is able to execute that NF. There are no catalysts needed to execute a NF. Vendors on Rubi-Ka will be willing to sell you nano crystals, but uploading the program from a nano crystal is the only way to learn a nano formula.

When a beneficial nano formula is executed, that program takes residence in the Nano Controller Unit of the player. Each nano formula requires a different amount of space in the NCU; if there is not enough space left, the player will be unable to receive the benefits from that NF. Naturally, implants and items can be used to increase the capacity of the NCU, so that you are able to have several nano formulas active at the same time.

There are 6 important nanotechnology skills specifically used to enable certain formulas: Material Creation, Matter Metamorphosis, Biological Metamorphosis, Time & Space, Sense Improvement and Psychological Modification. Different types of nano formulas require different combinations of these skills. For example, healing NFs generally use Biological Metamorphosis and Material Metamorphosis, while skill buffs use Psychological Modification and Sense Improvement. Nano formulas are split into 5 broad groupings, or schools, based on their effects: Combat, Medical, Protection, Psi, and Space/Tech.
