Newsgroups (sometimes called Usenet or Discussion Groups) function like an electronic "bulletin board."

  • You can post items to newsgroups via email
  • You can read newgroup postings with Netscape or with special software designed for this purpose.

Newsgroups are divided into several categories.

Liszt lists all of the major categories and the number of groups in each.

Several tools let you search for newgroups or information in newsgroup postings.

  • DejaNews is a search tool that focuses exclusively on newgroups. It lets you:
    • Browse through many of the main newgroups categories
    • Conduct simple or "power" searches of newsgroup postings
    • Read newgroup postings on the web
    • View newsgroup "threads"
    • Get help on using newsgroups and DejaNews' features
  • Liszt also enables you to search for newsgroups by topic.
  • Several search engines including Alta Vista and Hotbot enable you to search newsgroup postings.

The increasing amount of commercial "spam" and inappropriate postings is a problem in many newsgroups.

You can set up Netscape to read newsgroups using Mail & News Preferences under the Options Menu.
