Many people think that they are anonymous when they surf the Internet, but that is often not the case as the following sites demonstrate:

Some sites leave "cookies" on your computer that store information the site can access if you visit it again. To see whether there are "cookies" on your computer:

  • On Macs, use the Find option 's under the Finder's File menu to search for "cookie." If there are cookies, it may find a file called MagicCookie in the Netscape Preferences folder in your System Folder.
  • On PCs, search your hard drive in the directory c:\win\cookies

You can get Netscape to warn you when a site is trying to send you a cookie by checking the appropriate box in the Protocols section of Network Preferences.

If you plan to make purchases on the web, you should look for sites that enable you to send data securely. Netscape's Security Preferences can be set up to send a warning when you move from a secure to insecure site or vice versa.

If the site is not secure, the key in the bottom of the browser window will be "broken."

There are many resources available to assist parents and others who are concerned about inappropriate material on the Internet.
