Internet Addresses have several parts
- The first part of the
address indicates how you access the information:
- http - HyperText
Transfer Protocol - use a web browser
- ftp - File
Transfer Protocol - use a program for downloading
files
- news - Net News
Transport Protocol - use a program to read
newsgroups
- mailto - Simple
Mail Transport Protocol - use an email
program

- The second part of
the address, sometimes called the domain name, indicates
the name of the computer providing the information (e.g.,
pbs.org)
|
|
|
- The word after the
last dot is the top-level domain. There are several major
types of domains:

- There are also domain
names based on country:
|
|
|
- Information after the
domain name may indicate a specific file or it may
describe how information is organized on the
computer:
