Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black PearlSynopsisWill Turner's (Lord of the Rings' Orlando Bloom) noble-born crush is kidnapped by the captain (Geoffrey Rush) and cursed crew of the the Black Pearl. He enlists the aid of pirate Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) to rescue her. What I ThoughtWell, I was expecting a stinker, but this turned out to be quite a fun movie. The plot is pretty fun, pretty good action (though the swordplay sequences were a bit dull--If you want REALLY fun swordplay, see the Princess Bride), passable music, and good special effects. Orlando Bloom has the makings of a fine leading man. For the life of me, I couldn't figure out if Johnny Depp was overacting in a good way or a bad way. He plays pirate Sparrow in an over-the-top/drunk way, and I just didn't know whether to like it or not. But this IS a Disney movie about pirates, so I figured he's just having fun with it. Once you get used to it, his mannerisms are pretty funny. Geoffrey Rush was also quite fun as the captain with a curse. Even to this one-dimensional role he brings nuance and feeling. Go Geoffrey! The special effects were pretty unobtrusive. They WERE there (the curse is that the Black Pearl crew are really undead & you can see that in moonlight), but no flash, no big whooosh moment. So that makes the special effects just "there" as they're meant to be rather than in your face (*ahem* paging Mr. Lucas). So anyway, to sum up, fun movie. I never felt the 2.5 hours. |
